A sometimes challenging hike through the Accursed Mountains of Albania & Kosovo suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of physical fitness.

We’ll start in the village of Theth, where we’ll spend a day re-awakening our leg muscles before we tackle the famous pass to Valbona. From here we’ll continue eastwards, through high mountain pastures, before finishing our Accursed Mountains walking adventure in the valley of Rugova, Kosovo (we’ll arrange cross-border trekking permits in advance).

From Rugova we’ll descend down to the lively little Ottoman city of Gjakova, and the excellent Hotel Çarshia e Jupave – some luxury will be appreciated after a week in the mountains! Our final full day will see us take the spectacular Lake Koman ferry to the northern Albanian city of Shkodër, where the tour will end. From Shkodër there are buses north to Montenegro, and south to Albania (there’s even a direct bus to Prizren and Pristina in Kosovo).

TIRANA OR PODGORICA TO THETH

DAY 1 / SUNDAY

An image of the mountains you will see on a north Albania and Kosovo tour

We’ll be making an 08.00 start from Tirana in order to be at Podgorica Airport in time to meet the Ryanair flight from Stansted, arriving 10.40. From here we’ll drive to the border (which could take some time to cross as it’s high summer). Once we’re through we’ll make a quick stop for a bite to eat, then climb up and over the Boga Pass to Theth.

Included: Pick-up from Tirana or Podgorica. Supper. Village guesthouse accommodation (en suite).

THETH

DAY 2  / MONDAY

A day to explore the village, including a walk to the Blue Eye Spring further down the valley.

Included: Breakfast. Picnic lunch. Supper. Village guesthouse accommodation (en suite).

THETH TO VALBONA

DAY 3 / TUESDAY

After yesterday’s warm-up, things get more serious! We’ll make our way from Theth to the village of Valbona, which requires us to cross a high mountain pass – one of the most famous one-day hikes in the Accursed Mountains region.

Included: Breakfast. Picnic lunch. Village guesthouse accommodation (en suite).

VALBONA TO DOBERDOL

DAY 4 / WEDNESDAY

Doberdol is tucked right into the northeastern corner of Albania, very close to both Montenegro and Kosovo, and the walk to reach it is extremely beautiful. Don’t expect luxury tonight – you’ll be sleeping in a mountain hut with communal facilities.

Included: Breakfast. Picnic lunch. Supper. Basic village guesthouse accommodation (not en suite).

DOBERDOL TO MILLSHEVC

DAY 5 / THURSDAY

An challenging day, as we cross the border into Kosovo and continue northeast. We’ll be walking through high mountain pastures and the views today might be the best of the entire trek. Don’t expect any mobile signal up here – this is truly wild country.

Included: Breakfast. Picnic lunch. Supper. Basic village guesthouse accommodation (not en suite).

MILLSHEVC TO RUGOVA

DAY 6 / FRIDAY

Our final day on foot will bring us to a guesthouse high up in Rugova valley, where we can take off our hiking boots for the final time, enjoy a shower, and also the excellent red from nearby Rahovec, Kosovo’s wine region.

Included: Breakfast. Picnic lunch. Village guesthouse accommodation (en suite).

RUGOVA TO GJAKOVA (VIA DECANI)

DAY 7 / SATURDAY

Today we’ll make the scenic drive down to the city of Peja, where we’ll stop for coffees in the bazaar and reacclimatise to civilisation. After a (gentle) stroll around the city we’ll head for lunch at a restaurant close to the White Drin waterfalls and Sleeping Beauty Cave. Afterwards its an easy transfer to the Ottoman city of Gjakova, with a stop at the 13th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery of Decani en route. It’s a Saturday night, so Gjakova will be very lively in the evening, with a buzzing atmosphere. We’ll also be staying in the best hotel in town – a bit of luxury is in order after a week in the mountains.

Included: Breakfast. Restaurant lunch (set menu). 4* hotel accommodation.

GJAKOVA TO SHKODËR (VIA LAKE KOMAN)

DAY 8 / SUNDAY

A relaxed start – we’ll make a move at 10.00 and cross back into Albania. Instead of taking the highway we’ll catch the 13.00 ferry on Lake Koman – this is generally regarded as one of the most beautiful inland ferry journeys in Europe. After disembarking at Koman we’ll transfer on to our hotel in Shkodër, where we can enjoy a beer on the busy Pedonale at sundown, before an (emotional!) farewell supper at an excellent traditional restaurant.

Included: breakfast; picnic lunch on ferry; supper at restaurant in Shkodër (set menu).

TOUR ENDS

DAY 9 / MONDAY

From Shkodër there are buses to Ulqin (great fun in summer), from where you can jump on buses north to Bar, Budva etc. You could also grab a taxi straight to Podgorica or Virpazar on Lake Skadar for around €30. Or you can get down south to Tirana on the hourly bus too.

Included: Breakfast.

Joining Our Summer 2019 Accursed Mountain Walking Tour

We’ll be driving up from Tirana on the morning of Sunday 28 July to meet the Ryanair flight arriving from London Stansted at Podgorica, Montenegro. There are also easyJet flights from both London Gatwick and Manchester to Tivat / Kotor, in the north of Montenegro. There are regular buses to Podgorica, or a taxi will cost around €60-70 (let us book one for you to save any heartbreak).

You might also like to consider flying into Belgrade, and then catching the famous sleeper train to Podgorica. The best scenery starts after sun-up, and you’ll be woken anyway by the border guards on the Montenegro border. You should arrive in Podgorica around 10.00. Get in touch if you’d like more information on this option.

At the Tour’s End

The tour ends in Shkodër, north Albania. From here there are buses to Ulqin (1h) and Tirana (2h). A taxi to Podgorica costs approx €30.
